World University Championships in Canoe Sprint kick off in Zaslavl

ZASLAVL, 15 August (BelTA) - The 6th World University Championships in Canoe Sprint took start at the National Olympic Rowing Center in Zaslavl, Minsk Oblast on 14 August. Vice Premier Anatoly Tozik declared the competitions open in an official solemn ceremony, BelTA has learned.

The Vice Premier greeted the participants and guests of the championships on behalf of the Belarusian government. Anatoly Tozik wished athletes a fair competition in comfortable conditions as well as world, European, national and personal records.

All those present at the ceremony were also greeted by chairman of the organizing committee for the championships Education Minister of Belarus Sergei Maskevich. President of the European University Sports Association Adam Roczek spoke on behalf of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). He noted that this year's competitions have already made history with the number of participants. Competing in the World University Championships in Canoe Sprint will be 252 athletes from 22 countries. Adam Roczek expressed gratitude to the Belarusian organizers of the championships: state companies, NGOs and volunteers.

A cast of numerous dancers and singers as well as exhibition sailing races got the World University Championships in Canoe Sprint underway in a colorful ceremony.

The competition program starts at 9.00 on 15 August.
