Phisical culture and sport

The sports recuperation system embraces a stadium, 31 gyms, 51 open sports grounds, a children-youth sports school, a children-youth club on physical training, a club for teenagers A Young Sailor.

About 600 children are trained in 2 sports schools. Most popular sports in the region are football, volleyball, weightlifting, track and field, rowing, table tennis and chess. The best students continue their education in Gomel Olympic Reserve College.

The region trained 3 international masters of sport: Natalia Stasiuk – a bronze winner at the 26th summer Olympiads in Atlanta, Nikolai Khilman – a bronze holder at the Junior World Championships in 1994, Andrei Kravchenko became a world champion in 2004 and in 2005 won the European Championships in track and field.

In 2005 Marina Poltoran was a two-time winner at the European Champs in canoe and kayak. Bronze at the Junior European Championships in canoe and kayak went to Sergei Findiukevich.

The sports industry of the Petrikovsky district is represented by a developing social infrastructure. There are 93 sports facilities in the Petrikovsky district (70 of them in rural areas) for organizing and conducting sports and mass physical culture and recreation work with children and adolescents.

The training of the sports reserve in the district is carried out by the Children's and Youth Sports School of the Petrikovsky district, which has 4 departments for sports (weightlifting, athletics, football, volleyball).
The number of students involved in the institution as of January 1, 2024 is 263 student athletes.
The training of athletes is carried out by 9 coaches-teachers, of whom: 6 full-time and 3 part-time.

The number of sports sections and associations of interest in institutions of general secondary education is 135. The number of students involved in sports sections is 1,702, or 53.0% of the total number of students.
On the balance sheet of the institution there is a physical culture and sports hall, a mini-football ground built in 2019 under the social project "Bonfesto for children", equipped with artificial turf provided free of charge by the association "Belarusian Football Federation" and the sports and recreation complex "Pripyat" (hereinafter - FOK "Pripyat") commissioned in September in 2019.

FOK "Pripyat" includes:

outdoor sports core: football field with artificial turf and bleachers for 820 seats, three running tracks with synthetic coating, a zone for long jumps and triple jumps, sports fields (volleyball and basketball) with synthetic coating, a workout area, a playground with vandal-proof outdoor exercise equipment;

administrative and household building: gyms (strength room and cardio room), rehabilitation complex (sauna, mini pool, recreation room), rooms for living, two team locker rooms, cafes and administrative and household premises.

The opening hours of the Pripyat sports and recreation complex are daily from 8.00 to 22.00.
In addition to conducting training sessions, visitors to sports facilities of the Youth Sports School institution are provided with 12 types of paid services:

gyms (cardio zone, weight room);
sauna with a relaxation room (up to 6 people at a time);
cafe;
accommodation (three rooms with 11 beds and 1 superior room);
playing fields (football field, volleyball and basketball courts).

The coverage of employment in physical culture and sports in Petrikovsky district is 5,647 people or 22% of the population.

District mini-football, volleyball tournaments, friendly meetings are held on an ongoing basis, and master classes are organized for students of general secondary education.

And also, mass sports events are held on citywide holidays, events dedicated to holidays and memorable dates.

There is a rowing base, kayaking and canoeing departments of the Gomel Academy of Rowing Trade Unions institution on the territory of the district.

At the kayaking and canoeing department, 43 student athletes in 5 study groups improve their athletic training.

Also, there is one group in the district consisting of 9 athletes-students of the taekwondo department of the Gomel Specialized Children's and Youth School of the Olympic Reserve of Trade Unions in Wrestling.

In 2020, the Shakhtar  Petrikov football team was formed, which will compete in the First League football championship of the Republic of Belarus in 2023.

On September  22 2024, the Petrikovsky Museum "Legends of Sports of Belarus" was opened on the basis of the institution "Children's and Youth Sports School of the Petrikovsky district".

Petrikovsky district is the small homeland of such Olympic champions as Marina Litvinchuk (Honored Master of Sports of the Republic of Belarus, bronze medalist of the Summer Olympic Games in London, multiple world, European and national championships champion in kayaking and canoeing) and Nadezhda Lepeshko (Honored Master of Sports of the Republic of Belarus, two-time Olympic bronze medalist, world champion and Europe, multiple winner of the national championships in kayaking and canoeing).
